Cylinder Head and Manifold Discussion

profiler 210

I am looking to make some small improvements on my 377(4.155x3.48) over the winter. I have pretty much out of the box Profiler/PBM 210 heads. They were 72cc castings that were milled to 68cc. I smoothed up some small lips in the chambers and very minor blending around the seats. Its methanol carbureted and is in a Buick Skylark that weighs 3250lbs race ready driver included. Best et was 10.29@129. Do you think the 2.055 valve is large enough for this engine or would it be time for a 2.08? It makes a fair amount of torque for a short stroke motor because my best 60ft is a 1.34, I didn't know if the larger valve would hurt the low end much.I wanted to touch up the valve job this winter anyway because the heads were new and I figured maybe something settled in with some heat cycles. If the valve is going to cork the flow now is the time to change I suppose but, if I can get away without changing valves and do a little grinding to pick up a few HP that is cheaper for me no doubt.

With a 4.155 if anything it's under valved.

I have it at about 550hp

Yes, your numbers are about spot on. If I just install the 2.08 and blend is that enough leave the rest alone or will I need massaging into the runner some more? Actually...I have a 421 shortblock also, would a 2.08 be enough for that size engine also? I'm not sure how much valve can go into that casting without doing something with the seat. I just would like to get some of the low hanging fruit if possible.

If I remember correctly the head has a 2.133 seat ring. I have run a 2.125 on that size. The 2.125 will help from .400-.600 lift for sure.

I know every combination is different, but have you found any brand of valve that flows better than another in that particular head? Also, when I started with these heads I didn't intend to use shaft rockers. I ended up with PBM competition valves that are +100 and 3850 springs. I have LGM shafts on there. They seemed to have the best geometry with no shim under them but it looked as if they had been longer valves the pattern would be even better. What length valves do you run in these heads typically with shaft set ups? If I could squeeze a 3860 spring on there next time I would like to try, surely a longer valve will help just wanted to know if the longed valves do work out with better geometry.
